Advice and Legal Aid Centers (ALACs) have been established in both urban and rural areas close to refugee population concentrations. The objective of the UNHCR-supported Legal Assistance Projects is to provide free legal aid and counseling, including legal representation, to vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees in Pakistan. In order to ensure the beneficiaries have direct access to the service, the Legal Assistance Projects also conduct field visit in rural areas The legal assistance provided through the project includes assistance in releasing refugees detained under the Foreigners Act. The ALACs have also allowed Afghans to receive assistance against their illegal confinement (e.g. in police stations), land disputes, etc., and civil matters (money recovery and land disputes). Other activities carried out by the ALAC staff include visits, co-ordination meetings, legal camps, seminars, and workshops. Apart from dispensing free legal advice, Legal Assistance Projects assist beneficiaries in submitting applications to administrative bodies, lodging complaints and petitions before the courts and, whenever applicable, providing free legal representation in court proceedings. |
