Advice and Legal Aid Centres (ALACs) have been established in both urban and rural areas close to refugee population concentrations. The objective of the UNHCR-supported Legal Assistance Projects is to provide free legal aid and counselling, including legal representation, to vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees in Pakistan that are in need of assistance. Legal Assistance Projects provide beneficiaries with easy, free of cost and direct access to these services.
The project has allowed relatives to seek assistance from ALACs for the release of family members often detained under the Foreigners Act. The ALACs have also allowed Afghans to receive assistance against their illegal confinement (e.g. in police stations), land disputes, etc., and civil matters (money recovery and land disputes). Other activities carried out by the ALAC staff include visits, co-ordination meetings, legal camps, seminars, and workshops. The beneficiaries have been provided with easy access to free advice and legal aid and counselling including the legal representation.
Apart from dispensing free legal advice, Legal Assistance Projects assist beneficiaries in submitting applications to administrative bodies, lodging complaints and petitions before the courts and, whenever applicable, providing free legal representation in court proceedings.
